Can Jay-Z Do No Wrong?
Jay-Z Rocks the Hip Hop Internets!
Within the past week or so the Hip Hop Internets have been over joyed with the news of the Jay-z upcoming album Magna Carta Holy Grail via an extended premier commercial during the NBA Finals. In conjunction with this the sports world was again put on notice as Jay-Z and Roc Nation Sports President Juan Perez both became licensed NBA agents. While many salute and praise all that Jay touches I want to actually dive into what it was he has really done and its effects on industry beyond just him.

The announcement of Jay’s new music project was bundled within the earlier reported Samsung music deal he had just brokered. The hook for hip hop fans was that the 1st million people to buy this new phone would be able to download the new album for free and earlier than standard availability through retail and online. Sounds great right? This was intended to lock in platinum status with 1 million virtual “album sales” via Samsung. Unfortunately the higher ups at Bill Board had something to say about formula and stated that such a bundling deal would not be counted as actual sales if the download was free. I guess Jay had to do it so others wouldn’t have to go through it? The deal essentially was fine but to be honored as an actual “sale” the phone purchase or the download would have to incorporate the music industry minimum of $3.49 for a single or album.
It’s still an amazing union of self-promotion and endorsement. I am curious at how many artists are actually in a position to utilize this lesson.
Do albums with enough interest and demand come out to make this a staple of the Industry? Will rappers start making albums to include with car sales? Maybe Dr. Dre finally drops Detox with a special edition of Beats by Dre Headphones? Take a minute and think on it. Doesn’t sound so farfetched does it?
